Google Launches Android Device Manager: How To Use It

Google has launched Android Device Manager today, which helps you find your Android devices. You can find lost devices with it, find their locations, lock your device, and erase all data from them. Samsung(and perhaps others) have already offered similar applications to find your phones. There are also a few apps on the Google Play Market that help you find your phones using similar methods.

But now Google has officially released this service, which is a good effort from them.

Using this Android Device Manager is very easy. You can either use it as an app on an Android device, or you can simply use it on a computer. Here's how it works:

You can now access it from Google Play using the gear/settings icon on the upper right. Or it can be simply accessed from this address: https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager‎ , you can download the Android App from here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.adm

This snap is taken from the Web version. The Android-device version is also the same. You cannot see the location in this picture because the GPS is disabled on my phone. For Android devices with version 4.1 and above, you'll have to enable GPS tracking on them. Once you're logged in from the account connected to your Android device, you will have the option to 'Ring' and Setup Lock & Eraser.

Ringing is pretty simple, just click it and your phone will start ringing for 5 minutes, even if it's on Silent/Vibrate modes. You can ring for as many times you want.

The photo shows the 'Ring' function from the app, which rings your phone. Tapping the screen ends the ring.

Nothing important, you can rename your device from the Manager too.

Setup Lock & Eraser requires you to activate this option on your Android device once. Just click the option and it will send you a notification asking if you want to enable the option.

Once you do, you can easily lock your phone, change it's password and erase all the data anytime.

If your phone is offline and/or shut down, none of these features would work as it wont be able to connect to the internet. But as it is turned on and is online(connected to the internet), if you've sent the request to erase all data, it'll automatically do that once it connects with the device.
