An 18 year old girl in India, called Mangli Munda, has been married to a dog called Shenu, against her will, by her father and fellow villagers in the Jharkhand state of India. The villagers and the girl's father say that the girl carries a curse and by getting married to the dog, the curse will be passed from the girl, to the dog.

The teenager, Mangli Munda, has stated that she is "not happy with the marriage", while the teenager's mother has stated that they have to spend money on the wedding as it is "the only way we can get rid of her bad luckand to ensure good will towards her from the villagers.
The marriage was attended by the whole village.

The marriage is actually a part of a ritual in the village where young women are married to dogs before getting married to a man, which is believed to get rid of any bad luck the woman might possess and pass it onto the animal, causing the marriage to be blessed with longevity. Mangli Munda is not the first one to have been married to a dog due get rid of her curse, as the villagers have had many other girls married to dogs before.
The dog, Shenu, who is the groom of the wedding.

The marriage was carried out in the proper form of a Hindu wedding, with the dog Shenu being treated properly like a human groom is. The marriage is not legally binding, therefore allowing Mangli Munda to marry a human man now, as it is believed that her curse is now over.

The wedding was organized by the elders of the village after a local 'guru'

told Mangli Munda's parents that Mangli possesses bad luck and if she is married to a man, she would bring destruction and bad luck to the family and the people around her.

The girl, about getting married to the dog, said that she is not happy to being married to a dog, however, she is marrying the dog because "the village elders believe that my evil spell will be passed on to the dog. After that is done, the man I will marry will have a long life".

When asked whether she will marry a man now, she replied:

Yes, I will marry a man one day. Every girl dreams of marrying a prince.
