Movie Review: 'Room' (2015)

Room is a 2015 movie, based on a novel that was released in 2010 by the Irish-Canadian author, Emma Donoghue. It is directed by the acclaimed Lenny Abrahamson and stars Brie Larson as 'Ma', and Jacob Tremblay as 'Jack' in the main roles.

The movie starts off in the room, the story being narrated by Jack as in the novel, but it's from his understanding, which is of course not reliable, so the main progression of the movie is played out normally, with occasional narration of Jack's view of the recent events that just played out.

Brie Larson as Ma/Joy

As the movie starts off, you are quickly introduced to a 4 year old Jack and 'Ma' and we see their everyday routines, their deep relationship and how life is inside the room, as well as basically getting introduced to their small world and soon you see Jack turn older and 'Ma' teaching Jack a bit about the world, contradicting the rather funny version of things she told to Jack earlier. We also learn soon that 'Ma' is actually a captive of 'Old Nick', who tricked her with a story about a sick dog and trapped her in his shed where he constantly rapes her, and Jack is eventually his son. Later on, as advertised, they eventually get out of the shed and experience the world out there, which is a completely new thing to Jack, as they both try to adjust back into the real world.

The story is played out very well and there is a lot of development for the characters, and the performances by Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay are great and they quickly thrust you inside the intriguing and suspenseful nature of the movie, keeping you on the edge of your seat as you wonder what would happen next? It's not one of those stories that you can just guess that it's going to end that way, despite the fact what would happen after half of the movie was already advertised(experiencing the real world eventually), it's still no less of an experience as to seeing them living that way and how they manage to get into the real world. All this leads up to the ending of the movie, which is one of the most heart-touching moments in cinema.

Jacob Tremblay as Jack

The room in itself is not just any room, there's a whole idea of it. To us, we see a small room and 'Ma' and Jack living in it, but to them, especially to Jack, it's a whole world with it's own stories and lore, it's deep and for Jack, a planet of it's own.

The screenwriting of the movie is one of the best I've seen, the dialogues are very well written and take you right into the emotion and the bond of 'Ma' and Jack, as well as the innocence of Jack's narration, his version of the events and the world around him.

Lenny Abrahamson has proved himself once again with near-perfect film-making, and Brie Larson and Jacob bring life to the room, with decent performances from the rest of the cast as well. The score of the movie fits well into the whole atmosphere, and the locations that set up the atmosphere are very well picked.

The movie is easily, an 9 out of 10 for me. I would definitely recommend it for everyone to watch, and you wouldn't be disappointed. If you haven't watched Room already, you're missing out on a masterpiece.
